Div./Depart.: Industrial Automation Group – Field Operations
Position Overview
The Field Operations Technician (FOT) plays a crucial role in the execution of ATSI’s industrial automation and integration projects by performing hands-on installation, commissioning, maintenance, and technical support activities in the field. Operating at the intersection of instrumentation, controls, and networking, this position ensures that systems are deployed reliably and meet operational and safety standards.
This is a field-facing, client-supporting role that offers structured development opportunities and exposure to diverse industrial environments. It is well-suited for individuals with strong technical aptitude and a desire to grow into specialized or supervisory positions within the automation and controls domain.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
- Instrumentation, Controls & Commissioning:
Install, calibrate, and troubleshoot field instrumentation such as flow, pressure, temperature, and level sensors. Execute field deployment, startup, and commissioning of electrical, control, and networking systems. Perform loop checks and ensure functional operation of all field devices and subsystems. - Network, SCADA & PLC Support:
Install and configure industrial networking components (routers, switches, firewalls, radio links) and virtual servers. Support the deployment and minor modification of SCADA/HMI applications (Ignition, FactoryTalk View, GeoSCADA, AVEVA). Assist with troubleshooting and basic programming of PLC systems using ladder logic and structured text on platforms such as Rockwell, Siemens, and Schneider Electric. - Testing, Maintenance & Technical Support:
Perform structured system testing, debugging, and verification of instrumentation and control networks. Deliver ongoing field support including preventative maintenance, fault diagnosis, and system upgrades to optimize reliability and performance. - Compliance & Documentation:
Maintain compliance with industry standards, project specifications, and safety regulations (OSHA, EM385-1). Prepare accurate field documentation, including redlines, test reports, and as-built updates. Follow ATSI’s quality control and change management procedures. - Team Collaboration & Reporting:
Work closely with engineers, project managers, and client personnel to resolve field issues and coordinate implementation. The Field Services Technician reports directly to the Superintendent and/or Director of Operations, ensuring field activities are aligned with project objectives and operational priorities. - Additional Responsibilities:
Perform other duties as required in support of project goals, system integration tasks, and client service commitments.
Requirements:
- Field Operations Technician I – Entry Level (0–2 years):
- Basic understanding of electrical systems, instrumentation, or automation.
- Technical training, certification, or 0–2 years of hands-on field experience.
- Field Operations Technician II – Intermediate Level (2–5 years):
- Competency in wiring, loop checks, instrumentation calibration, and basic SCADA/PLC troubleshooting.
- 2–5 years of relevant field service or integration experience.
- Field Operations Technician III – Advanced Level (5–8+ years):
- Advanced field leadership, commissioning, and multi-system integration experience.
- 5–8+ years supporting complex SCADA, PLC, and industrial network deployments.
- All Roles:
- Proficient in reading electrical schematics, P&IDs, loop diagrams, and panel layouts.
- Familiarity with PLC and SCADA systems, industrial protocols (Modbus, Ethernet/IP), and control networks.
- Competent in the use of testing tools such as multimeters, loop calibrators, and protocol analyzers.
- Strong troubleshooting skills and ability to work independently in varied field conditions.
Certifications & Qualifications (Required and Preferred)
Required:
- OSHA 10 or 30-Hour Construction Safety Certification.
- Valid California Driver’s License with a clean driving record.
- Ability to pass DoD background check and drug screening.
- Ability to perform physical tasks associated with field work, including standing for extended periods and lifting up to 50 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.
Preferred:
- Confined Space Entry & Arc Flash Safety Training
- NICET Level I–III in Instrumentation or Controls
- EM385-1 Safety Certification (for federal/military sites)
- Water/Wastewater Operator Certification (Grade 1+)
- Manufacturer-specific certifications (e.g., Rockwell, Siemens, Inductive Automation)
- CPR/First Aid Certification
Key Industries
The ideal candidates will have experience supporting SCADA and controls systems in municipal water and wastewater environments (e.g., treatment plants, pump stations), as well as working in sanitary food and beverage facilities with batch processing, CIP/SIP systems, and familiarity with regulatory standards such as EPA, FDA, USDA, and FSMA.
