Position Overview
The Application Engineer (AE) supports the engineering team in the design, development, and testing of industrial automation systems. This is an entry-level position designed for engineer focused professionals looking to grow within the field of automation and control systems.
Primary responsibilities include assisting with SCADA/HMI configuration, supporting PLC programming tasks, and contributing to technical documentation such as system submittals and testing protocols. The role emphasizes collaborative development under the direction of senior engineers and provides opportunities to gain practical experience in automation system lifecycle, from design to deployment.
This position offers a structured introduction to the industrial automation industry and serves as a training ground for advancement into more senior engineering roles over time.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
- Writing PLC programs using ladder logic, structured text, function block diagrams, or other programming languages suitable for PLCs (e.g. Rockwell Automation (Plant PAX), Schneider-Electric, GE Fanuc, Siemens).
- Develop SCADA HMI application with HMI products including FactoryTalk View SE/ME, ClearSCADA/GeoSCADA, Wonderware/AVEVA, and Ignition.
- Assist program testing and debugging to ensure the functionality, reliability, and safety of PLC systems.
- Configure and install virtual servers/clients and network per project specifications.
- Prepare SCADA System Hardware and Software submittals per project specifications.
- Work with engineers to prepare system submittals, test documents, and user manuals.
- Participate in internal testing activities such as Functional Acceptance Testing (FAT).
- Support documentation updates based on field or client feedback.
- Providing remote support for installed systems as needed.
- Collaborate with the design team to interpret electrical schematics, control loop diagrams, and panel layouts.
- Learn and apply ATSI’s system integration standards, templates, and quality control procedures.
- Maintain version control and backup of control system software packages.
- Coordinate with project managers and engineering leads on project schedules and deliverables.
Requirements
- Degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation, Computer Science, or related field; or equivalent technical training.
- 0 – 2 years of experience with programming languages and graphic design software.
- Familiarity with SCADA/HMI platforms such as Ignition, FactoryTalk View, or AVEVA is preferred. Exposure to PLC platforms (e.g., Rockwell, Siemens) is a plus.
- Basic understanding of industrial networks (e.g., Modbus, Ethernet/IP) is beneficial.
- Detail-oriented with an interest in control system development and documentation.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a hybrid environment.
- Willingness to learn from senior engineers and accept feedback constructively.
Skills & Certifications (Preferred, but not required)
- Prior internship or co-op experience in automation or system integration.
- Experience in technical writing or structured documentation processes.
- Experience with following software: RA – Studio 5000, Factory Talk Historian, Factory Talk Asset Centre, Plant PAX process Object Library or similar systems.
- CompTIA A+, CompTIA Network+, ISC2 Systems Security Certified Practitioner (SSCP), and Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) Security
- Rockwell Automation Recognized System Integrator in at least one of the following disciplines: Control/Process/ or Information Solutions Provider
- Certification in PLC programming or specific vendor certifications (e.g., Siemens Certified Programmer, Schneider-Electric)
- Ability to read electrical schematics, P&IDs, and other technical drawings.
- Familiarity with Good Engineering Practices, Commissioning, and Qualification.
- Safety certifications (e.g., OSHA 10/30) are a bonus.

This role supports automation solutions in water treatment, distribution, and wastewater facilities. Familiarity with municipal infrastructure, SCADA telemetry systems, pump control, and regulatory reporting is essential. Engineers must understand EPA compliance standards and work frequently with city agencies, utility operators, and contractors.
Food & Beverage
This role supports automation systems in food and beverage processing plants. Emphasis is placed on sanitary design, CIP/SIP operations, batch processing, traceability, and integration with MES/ERP systems. Knowledge of FDA, USDA, and FSMA regulations is highly desirable, along with experience in maintaining production continuity and system validation practices.
